Needs help...
I usually don't dine out due to the high price and low quality of meals. However I promised my three boys while on vacation visiting grandma if we decided to go to Alki we will get some fish and chips. Spud's was highly recommended to me by two different people so since the hungry kids happened to be playing right across the street from Spud's the group of us said lets go eat! I thought the prices were high but new the food would be great because of that. To start with the cashier/order taker was not friendly or personable at all. He was acting like it was a mad rush and didn't greet or even make eye contact just tried to get me paid and done is how I felt. I passed that by and understood, since I am a cashier myself working retail and understand that we all have bad days. So...the fish was soggy...I lifted the fish up and wasn't sure if it was water from the fish or oil from the frying dripping? The fries were soggy also...the tartar sauce had some funky sweet flavor that I had never tasted even from the crappiest brand of tartar sauce out there. My moms tartar sauce tasted less sweet but still it was not that good(we ordered at the same time) and she tasted mine and didn't like it. In my order I had forgotten to get some coleslaw (which I love and is my absolute favorite)so I went back down and got some. Same bad customer service, from a women this time, and the coleslaw was not fresh, the cabbage was soggy and had a gross flavor to it. It was not good at all. I just thought being a "specialty tourist fish and chips place" it would have been better than the average but in my opinion it was way below average. I spent nearly $40 and I would have been happier to buy from a dollar menu for 4 at a fast food place and felt more satisfied, thats honestly how bad I felt it was. I was very disappointed and will never recommend or go back ever again.

Traveling across the US to eat at Spuds
i've been going to Spuds for about 50 years, I moved away to the East Coast and I will be there for a family event, and plan on going to spuds for the fish and chips and hopefully a blackberry milkshake- I like Ivar's too, but SPUDS is special. I only wish in South Carolina we could have fish and chips like Spuds- ours here are horrible.

Spuds has by far the best fish and chips I have ever eaten. They are not greasy at all, nice batter, large pieces, and always fresh. The tarter is also amazing if you like that. At first glance the prices may seem expensive but if you think about it its actually about the same you would spend anywhere else, but the fish is way better. My family and I travel about 30 minutes to go to spuds, we won't eat fish and chips anywhere else! It's a must try, you won't regret.

Want the runs?
Spuds used to be good. The last couple of times I went there, seemed like the oil needed to be changed. I got the runs for 3 days. Sunfish or Alki fish co. MUCH Better !

Responce to Mike
That's because we are owned by Ivars. We use Ivars chowder, and vinegar... other than that, we make and package our own tartar. :]

yum
Ive grown up on Alki and I have always loved going to Spuds. I have never had any fish and chips that even compare to what they make there. Although it is really expensive, its absolutely delicious. My forever favourite place for fried fish! :]

Spuds is still great...
People complain too much! I have enjoyed Spud's since the 70's, it seems that it was better then, but what isn't? Anyway, for all the whiners about Ivar's etc. move away from Seattle and you will realize how great the fast food seafood is around Seattle. I live in Las Vegas now and the only ff seafood around here is Long John Silver's, which is a -Zero Stars! Ivar's and Spud's are great, and Spud's with the great location on Alki, well pure heaven. I hit Ivar's and Spud's when I get back home and I really miss them both all year long. Quit complaining and enjoy the great fast food seafood selections you guys have, if you don't believe me, try a Long John Silver's some time...

ADVICE: Change the deepfryer oil more frequently
The view upstairs is probably the best on the beach. Nearby fish and chips locations are consistently better.

Dissapointment
One of my first samplings of Spud's was in 1941, just before the war. It was my favorite over the years, returning again and again for the best fish and chips. Then the original owner passed away, leaving it to a son. It held it's quality for a while, don't know what happened to the son. It became really disappointing in the 80's when I finally gave it up. I took my grandsons back in 2000 and it was nothing special at all. Even the new building (which is old by now) could barely draw up the memories of truly fine fish and chips wrapped in paper heading across the street to the beach...

memories
As a kid growing up (high school in the late 70's) we used to cruise alki and always stopped at spuds later for a bite. When I got older it was a favorite place to go with my boyfriend. I loved how they packed up the fish and chips and then we'd head down to the beach and then take a walk after eating. As I got older and had kids.. we took the kids...it became a tradition. I had no idea there even was a spuds in kirkland or any others around, nor did i care. It is the atmosphere and idea that spuds is the origonal and at none other than ALKI beach that I always loved. It brings back those good old memories of days gone by. And the food... well, fish is fish... I always thought it was pretty good. And loved the chowder!!! But the beach. Awweeeee the beach!! So today on my 45th Bday I am going to none other than SPUDS at Alki!! Memories :-)

kirkland Spuds is better
the Alki spuds cannot be compared to the privately owned kirkland spuds, The owner ship of spuds by ivars has given it a starbucks or Mcdonalds feel were yu come to eat just to eat, the spuds at kirkland is a place were yu come to eat the food becuase yu like their food. At the kirkland spuds there is a positive atmosphere and customers can gladly enjoy a histerycal conversation with the cookers and food servers as they wait for there meal. If you came in hungry you will leave full if yu came in distraught yu will leave with a smile on your face. come go to spuds of kirkland if your seeking more that just a piece of fried fish.

This is not the Spud's of old
I have been eating at Spud's since I was a little smolt "1956" and have always enjoied the fish & chips at all the restaurants owned & run by Spud's but I have found that the quality of the food has gone down, the scallops are not what they say they are,(Skatewing) the service has always been great there and it is one of the true spots for people visiting Seattle... Gotta stop scimping on the product!

Love it.
Gets a little crowded, but then it is at the beach so that's OK. And the crew could smile more.I heard it's associated with (or was, anyway)Ivars. Then I noticed how the malt vinegar labels look like they have had the Ivar's tags mysteriously cut off. The shrimp, the batter, the fries and the tartar does taste suspiciously similar, too. Things that make you go Hmmm.

The best fish and chips around!
I have been going to this place since I was a little kid, and so has my dad. When it comes to fish and chips, no other place comes close. Not your usual breading, which some people don't seem to like. And yes, the prices have gotten higher in recent years. But it's still worth it to me!

The Best Fish Since Helter Skelter!
The last time I had Spud's Fish and Chips was the fall of 1968 and it was delightful! I took my entire family there. If I ever get up that way again I think I might give it another try. See you around the block. Friends for life, Charlie

The Best Fish & Chips Ever!
Eating Fish & Chips is like eating Teriyaki...it's either a total hit, or a total miss. Spud's is a total hit. If I ever have to move from Seattle, I'll find a way to have Spud's Fish & Chips "Fed-Exed" to me.

Spuds Spuds Spuds
When I was younger, my dad would take my brother and I to Spuds occasionally, and I have always enjoyed their fish and chips, which are really not bad. Spuds has been around forever. Its a good place to relax, and if you sit upstairs you have a nice view. I would definitely recommend visiting Spuds.
